3 Days Until The Seven Launch!

The second to last of the seven horses in The Seven was inspired by my sister’s experiences in South Africa. She visited Cape Town several times, where her daughter lived, and the stories she told painted vivid images of a land rich in beauty, culture, and history. As I wrote this chapter, I was swept away by the intrigue and majesty of this remarkable country, where the past and present blend seamlessly into a tapestry of traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and incredible wildlife.

Destiny Khumalo and her brother Justice may be fictional, but the challenges they face and the social conditions in this story are real.

Chapter Title: A Land of Contrasts

South Africa’s geography is as diverse as its people. From the sun-drenched savannas of the Highveld to the lush coastal forests of the Garden Route, and from the arid Kalahari Desert to the jagged peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains, the country’s landscapes shift dramatically. One of its most famous natural wonders is Table Mountain, standing sentinel over Cape Town. This flat-topped marvel is home to the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with plant species found nowhere else on Earth. The rolling vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek stretch across ancient soils, producing some of the world’s most celebrated wines. I was fascinated to learn that South Africa is the seventh-largest wine producer in the world, with a tradition dating back over 350 years. The country’s unique terroir and Mediterranean-like climate allow for exceptional varietals such as Pinotage, a grape developed exclusively in South Africa.

Chapter Title: Footsteps of the First People

As I delved deeper into my research, I was taken on a journey through time, learning about the native tribes who first called this land home. The San people, one of the oldest civilizations in human history, lived as hunter-gatherers for thousands of years, leaving behind intricate rock paintings that tell stories of their lives, their connection to nature, and their spiritual beliefs. The Zulu, known for their warrior traditions and powerful leaders like Shaka Zulu, shaped much of the region’s history with their military strategies and cultural influence. The Xhosa, recognizable by their clicking language and rich storytelling traditions, played a crucial role in South Africa’s cultural and political landscape. These indigenous groups, despite facing immense challenges over the centuries, continue to preserve their languages, music, and customs. The history of the two tribes I selected for the characters in Destiny’s chapter have a fascinating history as well, as you will read about.

Chapter Title: The Horses of South Africa

Horses arrived in South Africa with the Dutch settlers in the 1600s, and over time, several unique breeds developed, each shaped by the country’s harsh terrain and demanding lifestyle. Among them, the Cape Horse became renowned for its endurance and resilience, playing a key role in agriculture and warfare. The Nooitgedachter, selectively bred for its smooth gait and gentle temperament, was developed as a versatile riding horse. But it was the Boerperd that truly stood out.

Chapter Title: The Boerperd – A Horse of Resilience and Spirit

The Boerperd is a testament to survival and strength. This breed traces its lineage back to the Cape Horse, which was influenced by Andalusian, Persian, and Arabian bloodlines. These horses were highly valued for their agility and endurance. During the Anglo-Boer Wars in the late 19th century, the Boerperd played a pivotal role as a warhorse. The Boers needed a mount that could travel long distances with little water, carry heavy loads, and remain calm under fire. The result was a horse known for its intelligence, surefootedness, and unwavering loyalty.

Through selective breeding, the modern Boerperd has maintained its stamina, versatility, and kind temperament. It is equally at home on a farm, in a dressage arena, or covering long distances in endurance riding. The breed’s ability to bond closely with its rider made it a perfect fit for The Seven. I wanted a horse that embodied the rugged spirit of South Africa—a breed that had been tested by history and had come through stronger than ever. The Boerperd was that horse. Destiny’s brother Justice raises that breed and plays the equestrian sport polocross, a popular and highly competitive discipline akin to polo. It is a little-known sport in the USA but more popular in other parts of the world.

A Journey Yet to Come

Writing the chapter about South Africa, I could almost hear the rhythmic drumming of traditional Zulu dances, see the golden grasslands stretching toward the horizon, and smell the fresh-baked croissants from the restaurant I incorporated into this story. The funny part? I researched the restaurants and selected one near Cape Town that sounded interesting. When Carol read that chapter, she called me and exclaimed, “Joanna and I went to that restaurant! It’s one of her favorites!” What are the odds? Apparently, pretty good… as Destiny is the name of the main character in this chapter.

South Africa came alive for me through my research and my imagination, but the best part is yet to come—experiencing it in real life. Our sailing adventure circumnavigating the world will one day bring us to this incredible land. I cannot wait to take a riding vacation through its breathtaking landscapes, to see with my own eyes the beauty I have only envisioned.
